Aboriginals had different ways of preparing certain foods, in particular, corn. One option was to soak the corn in water. After they would grind it and knead it into a paste. Once it is a paste, they spread the paste on a hot stone, which cooks it and makes it ready to eat! Another choice was to make hominy or samp. The Aboriginals made soup with green corn, beans, maple syrup and sunflower seed.

A typical peasant meal would consist of cereal and some sort of vegetable stew. A Habitant workman ate two pounds of bread and six ounces of bacon a day. The Habitants enjoyed eating cucumber. They had many different ways of preparing it though. One way was to eat it with sour cream and another way was cut the cucumber into slices, and then eat it with salt. The Habitants also made a soup, but they also relied on this soup that was made from peas, cabbage, and onions. Beef stew was considered as a main dish. Another dish considered delicious by the Habitants was roasted goose with apples. The Habitants always served melons with wine or brandy.

A traditional Habitant dish was called "pot au feu". They would use a black pot (iron kettle) with a good lid (this pot was in ever girl's dowry) to make the stew. In the stew was meat, roots, and vegetables. "Pot au feu" was served with bread. For dessert, the Habitants usually ate fruits. Plums, apples, preserved fruit and wild or garden berries were all considered a dessert.
